How to reduce your plastic waste on holiday

How to reduce your plastic waste on holiday

We love Cornwall for its natural beauty. We’re a sucker for its unfiltered, model good looks and can’t resist its clean-cut charm so we’re doing our bit to keep it that way – and would love for you to join us.

It’s super easy to minimise your plastic waste and enjoy camping in the most natural way possible. By making a few simple changes you can make a big difference. The environment will love you for it and Cornwall, well, it will stay as it should be – clean and gorgeous!

Say no to plastic straws

Swap your plastic straw for a paper one and you’ll save the planet from having to deal with yet another piece of unnecessary single-use plastic. The Seahorse, our onsite restaurant and bar, is a plastic straw free zone so you won’t even have to think about it when quenching your thirst with us. It’s just as easy when you’re out and about too; look out for businesses signed up to The Final Straw movement, there are over 100 and counting of them making a stand against plastic!

Carry your own reusable bottles

When you’re packing for your stay at Pentewan don’t forget to pop some reusable bottles in your bag. You can call into The Seahorse at any time for a free tap water refill and it’s not just us at Pentewan that will gladly get the tap flowing for you, check out ReFILL Cornwall for details of businesses across the county offering free refills.

Be takeaway aware

As part of our drive to reduce our plastic waste we have introduced 100% biodegradable cups at The Seahorse so you can grab a takeaway drink with a clear conscious. Our friends over at the Hubbox on the shores of Pentewan beach are equally mindful when it comes to their environmental impact so if you chose to enjoy one of their amazing burgers as a takeout you can be sure it will be big on taste and small on waste.

Pick where you spend your money wisely

In our beautiful patch of Cornwall there are a number of places to eat that are saying “no” to plastic straws; The Ship Inn in Pentewan and the Wheelhouse, She Sells, Teacup Tearoom and The River Street Café in Mevagissey to name a few. Dine with them to join the plastic boycott or for a great day out we can’t recommend nearby Lost Gardens of Heligan enough. Guaranteed to always have something to entertain the whole family, the garden is a grow-your-own showpiece and is another Final Straw devotee.

And when it comes to picking up foodie essentials opt for a farm shop. At the likes of Lobbs Farm Shop just down the road from us the fruit and veg hits the shelves bursting with colour and freshness – plastic packaging finds no home there.

Pick it up

Reducing your plastic waste gets a big thumbs up but take it a step further by picking up any litter that you see while out and about on beaches or walking the coast path. Follow the Plastic Free Pentewan Facebook page for details of organised litter picks in the area or check out the Clean Cornwall and Surfers Against Sewage websites.

We’ve got recycling bins positioned throughout the park for any plastic that you do find yourself using.
