6 watersports to try on Pentewan beach

By Pentewan Sands on the May 14th, 2019 in Holidays, Family, Cornwall, Activities, Lifestyle and Health

Thought that Cornwall was all peaceful walks, blissed out days on the beach and pasties and cream teas? You’d be right but it’s also seriously pumping at the other end of the spectrum. Cornwall is where the adrenaline rush gets addictive and action sports get epic. It’s all down to the huge golden beaches and the wild and rugged coastline – Cornwall is one big adrenaline-filled playground and with Cornwall Watersports right on our shores, Pentewan beach is in the thick of the action.

Here’s just a taste of what you can get up to on the water at Pentewan beach…

Stand up paddle boarding

Seriously cool and utterly addictive, stand up paddle boarding - aka SUP - is the hottest new water sport. Glide along the stunning coastline, paddle through caves and discover an abundance of marine wildlife. A definite mood pleaser, SUP is an activity for all conditions and best of all it is super easy to master. But be warned: once you’ve tried it you’ll be forever hooked.

Single and tandem SUP’s are available to hire from Cornwall Watersports, as well as two super-sized XL SUP’s, perfect for groups of up to eight people. Alternatively, join a lesson for expert tuition, top tips and guided exploration of the coast.

Kayaking

With clear blue water beneath you and eye-popping coastal scenery around you, sitting on top of a kayak in Pentewan Bay is a pretty idyllic place to be. Take your pick from the one- or two-person kayaks available to hire then strike out along the coast to visit secret beaches and explore nooks and crannies. Keep an eye out for our resident seal who may pop up to say hello!

Waterskiing or wakeboarding

Seriously high tempo and guaranteed to get the blood-pumping, waterskiing is the ultimate adrenaline fix. Hold on tight as you hurtle over the sea at 25 to 30mph and feel the thrill as you weave from one side to the other on a pair of skis harnessed to a rib. A little skill, a lot of luck and a let’s-do-this attitude are absolute essentials and if you like getting wet, you’re going to absolutely love it. Fancy turning the thrill factor up even further? Swap skis for a wakeboard and try out some jumps and 360 degree spins – there’s masses of fun to be had!

Windsurfing and sailing courses

If you’ve never tried windsurfing or sailing you’re in the right place. Pentewan Bay with its clear blue waters and idyllic conditions is the perfect spot to learn and once you’ve got the hang of things it offers access to great expanses where you can pick up speed and explore uncharted waters. The team at Cornwall Watersports are as good as it gets too, as they are super passionate about sharing their love for these exhilarating activities. Join them for an expert windsurfing lesson or hire the equipment and give it a go by yourself, and if you want to learn your port from your starboard there are a number of options to pick from with sailing courses available for children and adults.

Sombrero and banana boat rides

Get ready for speed, thrills and mega excitement as you climb aboard a Sombrero (an inflatable circular tube pulled by a rib) for an all-action ride across Pentewan Bay. Bounce, bounce, splash - how long can you hold on before you hit the water? In a group of four to five friends and family this is your chance to find out who has got the most staying power while having masses of fun and lots of giggles. Prefer things a little less high speed? That’s fine too. Banana boat rides are perfect for younger families of five to eight people.

Boat hire

Take in the beautiful scenery of the area and spot marine wildlife by hiring your very own small boat. Available in two to six man tender, motorised boat hire gives you the freedom to explore as a family and discover Cornwall by water. Call 01726 842939 or pop into Cornwall Watersports on Pentewan beach to chat through the terms and conditions. RYA Approved Powerboat courses in level 1 and 2 available to gain experience, knowledge and safety.
