12 super-fun things to do on the beach
When you stay at our campsite beside the sea in Cornwall, the beach is your playground. Unzip your tent and it’s there for the taking. Gloriously wide, ridiculously golden and right on your doorstep, Pentewan beach is one of Cornwall’s finest. There are 101 ways to enjoy it but here are just a few of our faves.
1. Play ball
When it comes to beach games, the old favourites are always the best. Rounders, piggy-in-the-middle, Frisbee…super simple and great for all ages, these games turn beach days into treasured memories.
2. Make sand angels
Way more fun to create than the snow version, sand angels are guaranteed to get everyone giggling. As you lie in the sand waving your arms around your hair will fill with sand and you’ll attract a few odd glances but the smiles will be more than worth it!
3. Bury Dad
We say Dad but it could be any one of your clan as long as they’re happy to get sand in every nook and cranny! There’s always a mad dash to the sea that follows.
4. Relaaax
Ahhh, you’re on holiday, you’re on a beach; a little bit of ‘me-time’ is well and truly in order. Sit back, read a book, soak up the sun and let the sound of rolling waves take you to a place of chilled out bliss…
Quiet time is always a winner among the grown-up’s and less so with the little ‘uns but with a little parental teamwork it’s possible to grab a share of beach relaxation, even with kids in tow.
5. Have a treasure hunt
Take shell seeking to the next level by giving the kids a full and varied list of treasure to find. Bounty can be everything from driftwood and sea glass to a mermaid’s purse and feather. The winner gets first choice of ice-cream!
6. Go rockpooling
At low tide grab a bucket and some nets for a clamber over the rocks. Delve into rockpools and search for crabs, sea anemone and sea squirts - just be sure to return your findings to their homes!
7. Swing and slide
This one is pretty unique to Pentewan because there aren’t many places in Cornwall that have a play park right on the beach. For us, combining two of our favourite things was a no brainer so on Pentewan beach you’ll find a slide, swings galore and a view that quite frankly knocks the socks off all other play parks!
8. Build a sandcastle
Build a fancy fort complete with moats and flags or pile a mound of sand sky high and race against the tide to stop it disappearing. An absolute must-do on every beach visit!
9. Create sand art
Collect seaweed, pebbles, shells and sticks and let your imagination run wild. Mermaids, pirates and even dinosaurs can regularly be found on the shoreline or keep it simple by writing letters and words in the sand.
Get sporty
Don’t just take a dip in the sea, max out on fun by trying some water sports. At Pentewan beach through the awesome Cornwall Watersports there’s a choice of everything from water-sking and wakeboarding to kayaking and paddleboarding. There’s also thrilling banana boat rides and boat trips aboard a 24ft RIB which zips around the coast spotting dolphins, basking sharks and seals.
10. Skim a stone
Flat stones that fit easily into your hand make the best skimmers but let’s not get too technical, it’s all about having a go and having fun.
11. Go wave jumping
Little legs will seriously love this and it can quite literally generate hours of fun. Give wave racing a go too!
